ABOUT TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS
When and how did the band form?
Drawing from the ranks of his high school friends, Petty founded his first band, the Sundowners. As often happens, the
band metamorphosed into the Epics and, eventually, Mudcrutch. After pulling together a demo tape in the living room of past
and future bandmate Benmont Tench, Petty took his show on the road, leading his bandmates to Los Angeles to pursue fame and
fortune. By 1974, the band found a home on Shelter Records and released a single, Depot Street . Despite some critical attention,
the band fizzled and soon disbanded. Never one to give up, Petty enlisted Mudcrutch members Tench (keyboards) and Mike Campbell
(guitar), along with Gainesville musicians Ron Blair (bass) and Stan Lynch (drums) to form the now famous lineup that was
dubbed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They released their first album, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in November 1976.
In 2006, the band will celebrate the 30th anniversary of that release.
Has the band always been Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers?
Tom explains, Yes, it was always Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, because Mudcrutch, the band that Mike and Benmont and
I had just before that, got burned so badly. We made a record, and then we put a single out, and the band broke up. And I
thought, If I'm going to start another group, I'm going to put my name into it, so at least I get something out of this. And
I wanted to have a lot of say in what went down. In the other group, I felt I had to stand silently by and watch it self-destruct.
So I really wanted to be the leader.
How does Tom go about writing songs?
I mostly write on the guitar, but I've written a few on the piano. I wrote 'Breakdown' and 'Don't Do Me Like that' on the
piano. All of The Last DJ was written on the piano. Sometimes if I've got something going on the piano, I might switch over
to guitar and play it on guitar just to see if something else might happen. Sometimes it sets me off into a new direction.
I also spend time writing things, writing lyrics, writing whatever interests me at the time, whatever feels right. And sometimes
I'll sit and write lyrics. I'll just write in my notebook. I'll jot down ideas or titles or something that seems interesting
to me. And then there's the other side of the coin where [words and music] both come at the same time. Those are the ones
I really like, where I'm just playing and start to sing and a song starts to appear.
I pretty much like to write alone, although I wrote with Jeff Lynne quite a bit on Full Moon Fever and Into The Great White
Open. We wrote in the same room, nose to nose. Mike [ Campbell ] and I have never written that way. It's usually by tapes.
He'll do his bits, and send it to me.
What awards have Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers received?
Too many to list, but in addition to the many Grammys and Gold and Platinum albums, some include MTV's Vanguard Award (1994)
as well as many MTV Video Music Awards, numerous ASCAP awards for excellence in songwriting, a Clio Award (1995), UCLA's George
and Ira Gershwin Award/Lifetime Musical Achievement (1996), California Music Awards/Bill
Graham Lifetime Achievement Award (1998), Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1999), Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame induction
(2002), R.I.A.A.'s Song of the Century for Free Fallin,' Radio Music/Legend Award (2003), Billboard's Century Award (2005),
Rolling Stone's Top 500 Songs of All Time/Free.
Tom has had 15 singles on the Billboard charts - does he feel pressured to write hit singles?
No, I don't really think that way when I write. I just think, 'I've got to come up with some more music,' and then kind
of hope and pray that one of the batch, or two or three or four of the batch, will be hits.
What about the Traveling Wilburys?
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Petty joined legends Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison as one
fifth of the Traveling Wilburys. They released two albums - Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 (1988) and Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3
(1990). I think George always had the idea in his head of the Traveling Wilburys. Actually, we had all been hanging out for
some time by then. We had all been hanging out socially. I think maybe we had already done part of Full Moon Fever by that
point. Roy had just come on the scene, because Jeff was going to do a track with Roy . The first day I met Roy, Jeff and I
and Roy wrote that song You Got It. Anything you want, you got it... We had written that song. So everybody knew each other.
We had been hanging out. And George decided -- cause he was just trying to do an extra track for single -- so he thought,
if we're all here, let's design something for each of us to sing on. And when he got the record on, he felt it wasn't really
a George Harrison record, it's more of a group. So what do you say we have a group? So that's how that ball got rolling. It
was a great band. It was really fun being in that band.
If Tom weren't a musician, what else would he like to do?
I feel like a lucky man. A lot of people really struggle to find out what they want to do in life, but I knew as soon as
I saw Elvis Presley, when I was 11. From that point on, music became my religion, my nourishment. It was also a safe haven
for me. My life was very turbulent as a child and a little scary, and music made everything seem right. It has also pulled
me through some other dark times.
Being so independent, as Tom ever considered eliminating the record companies and releasing his records himself?
This is something he has considered quite a bit lately, and certainly thinks it could be done. Tom - with and without the
Heartbreakers - writes and records a lot of songs so would like to release more records than he does he remembers when groups
like the Beatles would release up to three albums a year. I like the idea of having an independent label, I like that idea
much better because it reminds me of the early days of rock 'n' roll when there were a lot of independent labels, and they
were actually driven by people who liked music. They were music people, not lawyers or accountants or whatever you have running
the music business now.
What is Tom Petty's Buried Treasure?
An hour-long weekly radio program that Tom hosts on XM Satellite Radio Network. The first season of twenty shows wrapped
up on May 2, 2005, and Tom plans to do a second season in 2006. He personally chooses landmark songs, offbeat cuts and live-in-concert
classics recorded by legendary artists from Jimi Hendrix to Carl Perkins, ELO to Little Richard, Elmore James to the Beatles,
Bob Dylan to Jerry Lee Lewis, with Petty providing informed and passionate commentary.
What television acting has Tom done?
Tom has a recurring role on the animated program King of the Hill, playing Lucky, a character who earned his nickname when
he won a $53,000 settlement - enough to retire on - after slipping on urine in a Wal-Mart. He also had a special guest appearance
on The Simpsons and parts in It's Garry Shandling's Show and The Larry Sanders Show.
How would Tom like to be remembered?
Like Roy Orbison once said, 'I just hope I'm remembered.'

We love TEXAS, and we especially love roaming anywhere in the OLD WEST. The old towns, deserts, mountains
and high plains scenery make for a photographers dream. And, we really love those GHOST TOWNS !

LANGTRY,Texas, home of "The

probably any self respecting ghostwill be difficult to coax out in this building. BUT NOT SO for the rest of Langtry, old
graves, old buildings, and a rich colorful history make this spot a great one to HUNT GHOSTS.

A little note of CAUTION here...Mary and I have arrived at GHOST TOWNS before only to find that all property was fenced in or posted. Also,
some town locations may not be where advertised or mostly gone. (there's always that nearby cemetary, though)
We are very conservative
when considering the source of "orbs" but were pleased to capture this orb in broad daylight at this old ruin along a country
road in Galveston County.(center right of wall)
STAY WITH US as we
head deep into the West Texas Hillcountry to
find ghosts, and capture recordings of actual "VOICES OF DEAD PEOPLE"
Stonehenge, Texas
Mary and I had just let
the kids off at summer camp near HUNT, Texas, and we decided to try a short cut thru the Hill Country on Hwy 1340.
We were headed to Del Rio and figured the worst that could happen by taking an unknown back road was that we would see some
new scenery. We were sure correct on that one....To our astonishment, as we came 'round a curve on this little traveled road, there on our left, without a previous clue to us, appeared STONEHENGE, Texas,
tucked back away from the main thoroughfares.
Turns out the Stonehenge
re-creation was the dream of the late Al Sheppard, a former Hunt resident, whose ashes are scattered among the monuments. STONEHENGE,can be found by driving west on Hwy 1340 from HUNT, Tx If you need directions,
just ask at the filling station
and little store in Hunt. Hunt is in Kerr County, a bit west of Kerrville.
A Railroad Museum Adventure
www.paratexas.com
The Galveston Island Railroad Museum, located in the historical Santa Fe Railroad Building in Galveston,
was purchased by the Moody Historical Foundation when the railroad was closed in 1967, and is now maintained by that organization.
Today, the building houses the old terminal (The Peoples Gallery), freight offices, and the arrival and departure
tracks outside the building.
The museum contains 39 unique white plaster figures in the Peoples Gallery, and referred to as "Ghosts of
Travelers Past", were created by Ivan and Elliot Schwartze, brothers, of New York City.
These amazingly lifelike figures were made from live models, wrapped in wet plaster to form a mold. With
straws for breathing, and wires to hold up their arms, the models remained in place for 5 hours !
The effect of passing these ghostly-like figures in the old train terminal is an eerie and memorable experience.
But eerie is, as eerie does..... and, as usual, we soon find that Paranormal Investigations
of Texas knows just how to get the "Ghosts of Travelers Past " to talk to us !
Rich's crew today consisted of just family members...even Rich's Mom (seventy-something) got in on
the action by touring the train cars with a digital recorder, looking for ghost voices (EVP)!
Our investigative crew of four discovered that an old railroad yard is no place for wimps ! We found
spirits and ghosts lurking in every shadow !
Rich's Mom is wired for action with her digital recorder around her neck "Nanny...that's the one"
Rich's cousin, Wanda, and husband Ray are visiting from Chicago and helping on the ghost hunt...Wanda
places a digital near one of the "Travelers" to try to enhance chances for EVP messages on the live recorder
The voice at Galveston Railway that is labeled as "other language" I think he's saying: " 'Preciate
ya'now". Dmac.
REPLY: from Rich
Good job Dave !
Ya'll must be from the south ! It's interesting that we also got that "Yankees" EVP....looks like we definitely had an
old southern Texas boy in the ghost crowd.......Rich

Updated: 4 April 2005
Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) concerns unexpected voices found in recording media.ITC is a newer term that includes all of the ways these unexpected voices and images are collected through
technology, including EVP. Of the many hypotheses designed to explain these phenomena, the Survival Hypothesis has been
found to be most effective in answering the evidence.
AA-EVP Membership Information The AA-EVP is a nonprofit organization that is supported by membership dues and donations.
Join the AA-EVP! The Association is dedicated to helping people learn about these phenomena and has developed several important
tools for this purpose. Please visit the Membership page to learn more.
The Association was founded in 1982 by Sarah Estep and is currently directed by Tom and Lisa Butler.
The AA-EVP membership includes people who record paranormal voices, pictures and information from friends and loved ones
on the other side through tape recorders, telephones, television, computers and video recorders.
The Survival Hypothesis holds that we are nonphysical entities who are able
to exist in the physical aspect of reality because of our physical body, but that when our physical body dies, we as Self,
change our point of view to nonphysical reality. In effect, we exist before and
after our current lifetime. The working hypothesis supported by AA-EVP is that
these messages are, indeed, nonphysical in origin and that the Survival Hypothesis is essentially correct. However,
even though the fact of these messages can be demonstrated, their origin cannot. Considering
this, it is the goal of AA-EVP and its membership to find ways to improve the reception of these messages and to better understand
their origin.
In practical terms, all AA-EVP members are experimenters seeking to understand the evidence before them. Many have
collected very evidential messages, and are therefore inclined to accept that they are receiving messages from outside of
our physical reality. Other members remain skeptical, but persist in experimentation with the sure knowledge that, whatever
is causing the phenomena, it must be understood.
AA-EVP is not about religion, nor is it an Association of dreamy-eyed people hoping to make contact with more developed
spiritual beings. Members have a health curiosity about phenomena that must be understood. How could we not be
curious? What if these messages are nonphysical in origin?
We invite you to explore this web site with an open mind. Find out about EVP and ITC. See what members have
discovered. You will find sufficient information about EVP and ITC techniques to test these ideas for yourself.
If you have a well developed sense of curiosity, we know you will want to know more about these most important phenomena.
Disclaimer: The American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena cannot be responsible for consequences
resulting from the use of information provided at aaevp.com or in AA-EVP literature, such as the newsletter. There are many
variables involved in recording for EVP and ITC. It is possible that a person may become more “aware” of the nonphysical
influence in his or her life because of working with EVP/ITC. It is also possible that a person might encounter a disruptive
entity or be unduly influenced by the phenomenal voices and images. The AA-EVP hereby disclaims any liability to any party

I'm starting this page off with EVP sounds that I have aquired over the last year or so. Most of them were recorded
in my own home. We have come up with varied idea's about what we think the voices are saying, but please, judge for yourself.
Feel free to email me with your idea's.
A Voice says "I've Got One!" - This was recorded by me at Rookwood Cemetary in nearby Yagoona, Sydney. (29/06/1999)
A
Voice says "The Baby's asleep!" - as if to hush us up. My husband and I were outside doing yard work, whilst our baby son slept inside the house.
A
Female Voice says "That's Enough!" - as my baby son lay playing in his cot, alone in his room.
A Female Voice says "Helloooo!" - in an english accent, right in the midst of our conversation, whilst my sister and I had coffee at Emily Cottage - Campbelltown.
It is said that a girl named emily was struck by lightning through the upstairs window and fell to her death. Could this be
the voice of Emily? An interesting point to note is that my sister and I both taped the same conversation on our own recorders
which were side by side at the time, and the "helloooo" was the only sound that did not also turn up on my own recording.
Note also, that this is a full vocalisation, unlike the ghostly whispers we are used to hearing. (15/04/2000)
A
male voice says "Hey! Ya busy?" - My sister got this sound as she sat at home on her own, with her tape recorder. (26/04/2000)
A
Voice says "Hey! I'm over here!" - from my hall closet, as my two young boys play in the hall nearby. (03/05/2000)
A "Sound" taped in the car on the way home from a day trip to the cemetary with my husband.
A "Sound" taped during one of my random taping sessions at my home. (20/10/2000)
A "Sound" taped in my babies room while he lay in his cot.
A "Door Slam" amongst other unexplainable sounds taped in my kitchen whilst I was out shopping and not a single person was at home.
A
ladies voice sings "Rock-a-bye-baby" to my son while he lays in his cot.
Someone "Whistles" out a tune in my home after my sister receives "a message" from our "Uncle Charlie" who had recently passed over that I should
turn on my tape recorder.
A ladies voice breathes the word "noooo" as my sister, niece and myself enjoyed a snack at the haunted Emily Cottage. (15/04/2000)
This
"sound" was taped by Jill and Roberta whilst investigating the building where Jill works. (09/02/2001)
Another
sound from Jill's work. This one says "Get Out" The sound is right at the beginning of the recording. (09/02/2001)
Also taped at Jill's work.
