HARWINTON - As if the ashy results of a devastating fuel fire wasn't bad enough, victims now must deal with the loss of their
home, their livelihood and a family legacy.
Automotive repair shop Iffland's Colonial Gas and Service, car detailer Auto Clean, and the second-floor apartment of tenants
Christi Winegar and T.J. Berti were severely damaged in a fire Thursday around 2 p.m.
"I honestly can't believe it; everything we've worked for became a barbecue," Auto Clean owner Carmine Valentino said. "Everything
is completely lost; there is literally nothing that can be saved."
Valentino began renting two bays from Iffland owner George Iffland Jr. about two years ago when he began his business at the
Route 4 building.
About $15,000 to $20,000 worth of Auto Clean equipment was destroyed and the company is now out of business, Valentino said.
Iffland's father, George Iffland, started the family business more than 40 years ago and left it to him.
Iffland said that he has run the auto mechanic business all his life and is unsure what to do now.
"This is all I've done," Iffland said. "Forty years."
Iffland's niece, Heather Berti, stared at the torched remains as tears ran down her face.
"It looks like a double-family trash can," Heather Berti said.
Heather Berti said she was emotional from the worry for her family's safety, and was thinking about the memory of her grandfather.
"This was my grandpa's gas station and it's like his legacy just burned up too," Heather Berti said. "Thank God no one got
hurt."
T.J. Berti and Winegar were not home when the building was set ablaze, and they were relieved when they found out that Chavo,
their 1-year-old chihuahua, was saved by firefighters.
"We got Chavo, that's all that matters," Winegar said. "He was my main concern, anything else is just stuff. We'll start over,
I guess."
Only a few burnt books and piles of clothing firefighters set on the side of the building on the lawn were salvaged from the
apartment, T.J. Berti and Winegar said.
There was a solemn tone among those whose lives were affected by the fire, but also shock and gratitude that no one was killed
or seriously injured, Iffland said.

big shows was at the Alamo Dome.Jim Beal arts writter for the express news called our events true multimedia events mixing
art,music and some dancing.Ghici cant stand rock so he left it up to me to create the rock live art & music events. I paint
very fast an can paint over 14 oil paintings live in less then 45 mins to music along with playing most instruments as well,
